After many hours poured in of effort, energy, and heart, my latest album, T-Rex, is now released!
I’m really excited about and proud of this album. So excited and proud, in fact, that I made it so you can listen to the complete track list on my new & improved website for free!
After you check it out, please spread the word. Tell your friends in person, go tell it on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, wherever! Then, buy the album—$4.00 for 5 songs! Independent music is created by independent musicians like me, who need your support and help to get our art noticed.
been working on lots of new material and spending a lot of time working on my chops. lately, i’ve been working through various jazz standards and old faves from “the real book”, working on chord comping (2 or 3 note voicings FTW!), and broadening my melodic horizons. to that last point, for all the musicians in the audience, i’d heartily recommend “the thesaurus of scales and melodic patterns” by nicolas slonimsky. it’s absolutely loaded with short and effective melodic ideas/riffs that are easy to get in your head and under your fingers. absolutely worth checking out!
Sometimes when working on a long project, your view of the work can change. There are sometimes pieces that, while I love them still, for whatever reason end up no longer fitting the overall vision of the whole collection of songs. Such is the case for this tune.
“The Sky Above” was actually the first song I started on when recording “By Your Side” and was an early favorite. But as the rest of the CD began to take shape, this particular song (and some others as well) no longer fit the feel of the rest of the record and, ultimately, I left it out. It’s a song that, frankly, is probably a little too strange for most people and is one of those things that you’d have to be into my music to really enjoy.
And so, in that spirit, I give it to you in hopes that you are one of those who will enjoy it for what it is – a document of where I was and what I was doing at the time.
