adventures in mixing!

two posts in one day! impossible, you say!

that can only mean one thing…

i’m nearing completion on another round of awesome new aural madness!! or, you know, some new music 😉

yep, finishing up some new tunes this week. should be available very soon. i took a different approach this time around, focusing more on just fast, short, punchy tunes that will make excellent music  for driving or video game soundtracksthe kind of stuff that makes you want to hop your car and tear down the local highway. once you hear it, you’ll see what i mean.

at least one present for nevis fans

Sometimes when working on a long project, your view of the work can change.  There are sometimes pieces that, while I love them still, for whatever reason end up no longer fitting the overall vision of the whole collection of songs.  Such is the case for this tune.

“The Sky Above” was actually the first song I started on when recording “By Your Side” and was an early favorite.  But as the rest of the CD began to take shape, this particular song (and some others as well) no longer fit the feel of the rest of the record and, ultimately, I left it out.  It’s a song that, frankly, is probably a little too strange for most people and is one of those things that you’d have to be into my music to really enjoy.

And so, in that spirit, I give it to you in hopes that you are one of those who will enjoy it for what it is – a document of where I was and what I was doing at the time.

And that’s not all…

We now have a brand new Nevis store, offering t-shirts for men and women, and water bottles to help save the polar bears and the planet!  Plus, all Nevis music is on sale through the holiday season!

It’s a great time to be a Nevis fan 🙂  Thanks for listening!

now onto more practical bits

so moving on from the more abstract notion of ideas… let’s go onto how to turn that idea into something finished.

if you’re a visual artist, you may start by drawing some thumbnail sketches.  if you write prose, you might begin by writing a brief synopsis or some notes on major plot points or characters.   if you’re a musician you could start with a melody or chord arrangement, maybe lyrics.

for me it’s often a basic chord structure and rhythmic feel.  usually on guitar or bass.  for me, this is like a visual artists thumbnail sketch.  the basic outline from which everything else is built.  i’ll take this basic idea and record it, and then play around with it, trying different notes, rhythm, etc.  once i have that, i’ll usually start coming up with other parts to add to the idea and begin to shape it into a song  – and then it’s time to really start recording.

Coming Attractions!!

first off, the new music is almost completely finished and ready for your enjoyment! there will be 9 brand spanking new songs with some crazy stuff you’ve never heard from me before going on, especially in the guitar department 😉

also, for everyone on the mailing list, there will be a little surprise coming your way not long after the new CD comes out! if you’re not already on the list but dig my tunes, go here and click on the “become a fan” link.

and finally, once the new music is out, i will start doing regular blog updates! for the first few, i’m planning on talking about how i go about recording and making noises for you all to hear. i promise though, for you non musician types, i’m not a technical guy so it wont be dull and wordy 🙂 just some short bursts on why i do things a certain way and how.  and, if you have any specific questions you want to ask, feel free to post them as we go along and i’ll take a shot at giving you some answers!

ok, that’s it for now, back to work!
